It was 2 years ago on Thanksgiving, that the First Lady of Phoenix Rock Radio passed away. Her name was Nina Joy and her name reverberates into a smile for those that knew her and listened to her on the radio in the 70’s. RFP invites you to join us for a special encore presentation of Our Tribute to Nina, this Saturday at November 18th at 5pm (AZ/Mountain time) and Sunday, November 19th at 12 noon
She came from Vermont and got her start in Arizona radio on KWFM in Tucson – a year later she was hired by Bill Compton and joined the staff of the underground KDKB. Her name was Nina Joy, Arizona’s celebrated first lady on FM radio. As one of the early female rock radio air talents, her distinctive style quickly garnered her a faithful following and earned her the status of “radio legend”.
Nina passed away in late November 2016 and we here at Radio Free Phoenix wish to honor her this weekend with a musical tribute to her life along with reflections from many of those that worked with Nina.
Nina will be fondly remembered by many of those that knew and worked with her including Janie Snyder (of KWFM), Scott Niccolson (KDKB’s evening DJ) Ted Stratton (KDKB news guy), Mark Mykanen (KDKB news director), Steve Zind (KCAC, KDKB & KWFM), Barry Everitt (KDKB morning host era 1976), Johnny D, Bob Boze Bell, Lee Powell, Hans Olson, Marty Manning, Jack Alves and many others. Join RFP for this moving tribute to the memory of Nina Joy as hosted by Andy Olson.
It’s a celebration of the life of Nina Joy this Saturday, January 30th at 5pm & an encore presentation Sunday, January 31st at 3pm Arizona Time on Radio Free Phoenix.

A note from Nina’s sister, Laura……
Nina was beyond gifted in her ability to get under the lyrics as well as the music/to mix the unexpected tracks/to make political and personal statements all her own through the songwriting of others whom she respected so much (even as her own writing evolved). Her potential even in this unexpected last stage of her life was boundless. In the early days of her radio, she was thwarted only by her lack of business savvy and self-confidence: she was an artist and didn’t know, in a time where there were so few women let into rock’n roll (even worse than now!), how to play that game. It broke her heart but never stole her spirit or her humor. I am forever grateful to have been her sister and do not know how to deal with a world without her. She inspired me, annoyed the hell out of me and made me laugh so hard that we were forever grateful that there were always two bathrooms in the house when we were together.I send this on to share this small piece of my magnificent little sister with you. There was so much more we will never get to experience.

National School Lunch Week was initiated in 1962 by then President John F. Kennedy. National School Lunch Week, abbreviated as NSLW, serves as a week long commemorative to appreciate and initiate a positive school lunch experience, town by city, county by county, and state by state.
National School Week runs for a school week every October, with this week running from the 12-16th.
However, this week just reminds, schools, parents, educators, and students to take any week to reflect and embrace positive eating habits in the school lunch room setting. We had the opportunity to speak with Carol Weekly,RD, SNS Director of Child Nutrition Queen Creek Unified School District #95.
She spoke greatly into turning AZ School lunch room into a positive and healthy atmosphere.
Arizona represents over 53,000 individuals who are helping keep a positive commitment to child nutrition.
Mission statement from this years School Nutrition Association from School Nutriotion.org:
“The NSLW 2015 theme is “School Lunch Snapshot” It’s about sharing the best, real images of today’s school lunch—fresh fruits and veggies, whole grains, milk, and smiling students. It provides a great opportunity for School Nutrition Members to capitalize on using social media to promote your program to parents and students, too!”-
Radio Free Phoenix urgently needs a cash infusion to stay on the air. Our 2015 RFP Radiothon is running now through Monday. We are asking for your donations so we can continue our mission of preserving this great music and sharing it with the world (while remaining commercial-free). Please Donate HERE
* Radio Free Phoenix presents great music from the entire era of Rock N Roll with musical knowledgeable DJ’s along with many great specialty features and shows like Banned Rock Roll with Andy Olson, What You Need To Know with Michael Thomas Jr, The Ripsnort Radio Hour with Jim Bachman, The Grateful Deep Hour with David Gans, Zappa Universe with Tom Tuerff , Acoustic Cafe with Rob Reinhart, The Pirate Years with Paul Peters and many more.
* Help us stay commercial-free. We will never sell-out by bombarding our listeners with 9-10 minute blocks of obnoxious commercials.
* Because our entire staff works on a volunteer basis, we have a very low overhead. However, listeners must donate to cover the essentials such as server fees, music fees, electric bill, office rent, etc. Our only source of income is through CD & T-Shirt sales on-site and listener donations.
* Listeners can donate on a one time basis or with a 6 month subscription plan (such as $20, $40, $60, $80 or $100 per month for six months). Every dollar raised goes to pay our basic operating expenses.
Join Radio Free Phoenix for a new daily feature with Andy Olson called “Banned Rock N Roll” starting this Monday – featuring the stories and songs behind rock songs banned from radio & television from the late 50’s through the 00’s. This also includes the many songs banned from airplay by the BBC!

Every Tuesday night at 8pm (AZ time) join Liz Boyle on RFP for 80’s Kickback – an entire hour of New Wave music from the 80’s – The kind of songs that were guaranteed regular airplay on early MTV and caused radio programmers to start watching MTV to see what videos were being played. These stations, worried about losing their listeners to MTV, added a lot of this music to their playlists. causing so many new artists and bands to be exposed to the masses – It was a great time for music!

Michael is the newest staff member of RFP and earned a B.A. in Broadcast Journalism from Columbia College Chicago. Michael is a News Junkie, Cinephile, Audiophile and Sports Fanatic. He’s also a Vinyl Junkie who loves playing music on his vintage console and an all around ”old soul” who loves all things vintage, like mid-century audio, watching old foreign, silent, and independent films and is a big Frank Sinatra fan too! Michael is new to Arizona having moved to Scottsdale from Chicago in January 2015.
I guess you can call him the RFP News Guy. In addition to “What You Need To Know” he is also putting together the new Radio Free Phoenix Concert Calendar which starting Monday, will be heard 7 days a week on RFP!
